What Our Clients Don't See

The other day, we were in a meeting with a client when she laughed and said, "I don't know how you do it. Your team responds to my needs so quickly, but every time I open Instagram, you guys are skiing or on a beach."

It was a fair question. I smiled and told her two things. First, social media isn't always real-time. But second… Yes, we absolutely make time to enjoy each other's company. And I think that's one of the biggest reasons we work so well together.

Somewhere along the way, today’s business culture started believing that the more hours you spend behind a computer, the more productive you'll be. We find the opposite. When our team gets out on the lake after work, grabs dinner, hikes together, or catches a powder day, we stop being coworkers and become teammates. And…that matters.

When you've built real friendships, trust comes naturally. And trust shows up when deadlines get tight, when someone needs help, or when an unexpected challenge lands on your desk. Nobody keeps score; we simply know we've got each other's back. It turns out there's real science behind it.

Research from the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development found that teams built on trust and strong relationships consistently perform better together. Plus, studies published in Frontiers in Psychology show that people are more creative and more willing to share ideas when they feel connected to the people around them.

For a creative agency, that's EVERYTHING. Some of our best ideas don't happen sitting in a conference room. They happen on a hike or during a conversation that had absolutely nothing to do with marketing, until suddenly it did.

Here's the part that surprised me as a business owner. I don't think we do this enough. As CEO, that's on me. There's always another proposal to send or another campaign to review. But I've realized stepping away isn't taking away from the work; it's part of the work.

When people are emotionally refreshed, creatively energized, and genuinely connected to one another, they don't come back doing less. They actually come back doing better. So if you ever see our team jumping off a dock into Lake Tahoe on a Monday morning...

Don't assume we're taking a break from work. We're investing in the relationships that make the work better because great marketing isn't built by people who simply work together.

It's built by people who genuinely enjoy doing life together.
